Judicial Externship and Scholarship Program

Program Overview: This year, the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association is launched its Judicial Externship and Scholarship Program for law students from, or interested in working in, the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Program’s mission is to increase access for Hispanic law students to highly sought after judicial externships in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas and the Court of Appeals for the Fifth District of Texas at Dallas, with the long-term goal of increasing the number of Hispanic lawyers who serve as judicial law clerks for judges on these courts.

For summer 2022, DHBA will select exemplary Hispanic law students to be placed for ten weeks (full-time schedule/minimum of 40 hours per week) as judicial externs in participating judicial chambers. Recognizing that Hispanic law students are often unable to pursue judicial externships because these positions are often unpaid, the program will provide a $3,000 scholarship to each selected program student.

Thank You to Our Sponsor

The DHBA's inaugural 2022 Judicial Externship and Scholarship Program for law students would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsor Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. ("EBG"). We would like to thank EBG for matching DHBA's initial contribution, thus enabling the program to get started.

2022 Program Recipients

Astrid Fuentes (UNT Dallas College of Law) will be a judicial extern with both the Honorable Robbie Partida-Kipness and the Honorable Dennise Garcia, Court of Appeals for the Fifth District of Texas.

Daniel Varon (SMU Dedman School of Law) will be a judicial extern with the Honorable Irma Carrillo Ramirez, U.S. Magistrate Judge, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
